World Series Game 7

October 30, 2019. Washington Nationals 6, Houston Astros 2

The Nationals would mount one last late-innings rally to cap off their season, beating the Houston Astros 6-2 in the final game of a weird, intense World series. Neither home team would notch a victory in this series, and the Nats survived two elimination games on the road to claim their first World Series trophy.

We analyzed fan heart rates during the game, and identified the following patterns:

  • While fan excitement spikes slightly at the start of the game, most fans in our survey show a relatively moderate heart rate through the first 6 innings, while the Nationals offense struggles. This suggests that offense really is more interesting to many fans than defense.
  • Howie Kendrick's home run, which gives the Nationals their first lead of the game, is the single play that creates a dramatic reaction in every fan's heart rate.
  • Adam Eaton's RBI single is the play that creates the highest heart rate among any fan in our survey.
  • There is a small flurry of heartbeat activity when Houston pitcher Zack Greinke exits the game. Greinke had been dominating and frustrating the Nationals batters. Fan interest (and, likely, optimism) increases as he departs and a new pitcher comes in.

The flattening of all the fan heart rate lines at the end of the night is evidence of the shared journey of these fans.
